Julie
This girl produced different presentat of the split drawings, but believe this is still a valid example of the phenomenon I am describing.
I saw Julie when she was thirteen years old. Mrs J had moved with her children to the area of the Clinic not long before saw her with Julie. Julie had joined the local secondary school, but was finding it very difficult to adjust to the new neighbourhood She complained of a multitude of physical symptoms but several consultations with the local general practitioner failed to elicit any physical abnormality. Quite reluctantly, Mrs accepted consulting the local Child Guidance Clinic.
The family had lived through very traumatic years. Apparently, Mr J not only abused alcohol, but was also violent towards his wife and children. After many years of marriage, Mrs J decided to put a stop to the marriage and left the home with the children, managing to be rehoused in a new community, quite far from where they had lived. Mrs J was trying hard to rebuild her life, but recently her children had come home to tell her that they had unexpectedly met their father inthe street, and he had told them that he carried both a gun and a knife, warning them that they should report this to their mother.
Julie looked younger than her age. She did answer questions, but only in whisper and in monosyllable. After while, noticing that she looked quite often at the sheets of paper and pens on the desk by which she was sitting, I suggested she might make a drawing. she drew a large cat, standing in a field with plants, grass, and clouds around the sun(Figure 20). I asked her to tell me something about the cat and she said he was happy because it was such a nice, sunny day. I asked about the squiggly line on each side of the cat and she burst out laughing, but was totally unable to explain what they represented or why she was laughing. I had to accept her not knowing, but I noticed that she was still holding the pencil and I asked if she perhaps wanted to make another drawing.
Julie put the drawing aside and placed another sheet of paper in front of her. She now drew (Figure 21) a very large tree and a garden. She looked at the drawing for a time and then drew bird on a branch of a tree. When I asked her about the house, she told me that a womanand her two children lived in it. She said they were happy because they liked the house and the garden. There was a pause; she looked at both drawings and then added that the cat of the first drawing also lived in the same house. I asked her to enlarge on this, but she was not able to do so.
I decided to find out what would happen if we superimposed the two pictures. She had drawn the cat with the paper in a vertical position in front of her and the second drawing was made with the paper lying horizontally in front of her. I therefore put one page on top of the other, making sure that the bottom sides were perfectly matched and that the vertical page was exactly in the middle of the other one (Figure 22). To our surprise, when we looked at these drawings against the light, we found that the bird was placed exactly inside the cat's belly. Julie burst out laughing when she saw this. I asked her if she had made up any story to accompany the drawings she had made or if she had imagined anything specifically about the cat and the bird She denied having built any story and repeated that the only thing she could say was that the cat lived in the house. So, I asked her, "What about the bird then?", and she laughed again. "Oh! It had better fly away quickly!"
After a pause, I suggested that her drawings seemed to depict how happy she felt living in the new house with her mother and brother, but that she was afraid that her father(the cat) might come and spoil everything. Julie agreed that this might be the case and her mother, who had been observing closely the drawings and our conversation, said that this was precisely how she felt about their situation. Julie and Mrs J now talked about their terror that any of them might be seen in the streets by people who might report their whereabouts to Mr J. It was not surprising that both Mrs J and her children felt so insecure and tense.
Comment
I do believe that the image resulting from the superimposition of the two drawings is not a coincidence. It is very probable that Julie saw herself represented by the bird and that the cat was an image of her father as big and powerful. It is conceival that Julie harboured secret wishes that her father might reappear and again be a presence in her life, but such an interpretation could not be raised in the context in which the interview was taking place. I chose to concentrate on the shared reality of their everyday life that brought an element of serious danger to the appearance of her father. Julie felt isolated at school and had asked her teachers to move her to the class where her friend was:
the school agreed to this and the reports we had over the following months were that Julie had settled down and was much happier.
